Staples Boss Will Run Sports Unit.


Tim Leiweke has been promoted to overseer of Philip Anschutz's entire billion-dollar sports empire, which stretches from L.A. to Europe.

The sprawling, multi-centered megacity is such that its downtown core is often considered just another district like Hollywood or .

Leiweke is also overseeing the conversion of Staples Center for the upcoming Democratic National Convention, of which he is a co-chair.

"Most people in the sports world understand the unbelievable power Anschutz brings to the table because of his multiple holdings," said L.A. sports consultant David Carter. "Tim Leiweke... has (become) as politically savvy a person as there is in this town, someone who able to understand the landscape, explore opportunities and run with them. He's been on a very, very fast track in L.A. the past two years."
