and expert management capabilities, which will be key parts of NetCoach," said Wayne Fuller, Stanford Telecom's director of network management. "In addition, we are excited to be able to add the intelligent fault and performance management capabilities of Gensym's new Fault Expert. With Fault Expert, we can better address the quality of service issues and large volumes of message traffic that are inherent in ATM networks."

NetCoach will provide unique knowledge-based applications for fault and performance management, as well as planning and simulation capabilities for heterogeneous ATM networks. With its ability to support multiple vendor products, NetCoach is being designed to simplify the entire process of ATM network management and provide the flexibility to construct an ATM infrastructure with best of breed products. By anticipating future configuration and service requirements, NetCoach will also support proactive management of ATM networks. Stanford Telecom plans to make NetCoach generally available by the summer of 1997.

Gensym's family of software products is built around G2, a graphical object-oriented environment for building and delivering intelligent systems. G2 lets non-programmers create graphical models In probability theory, statistics, and machine learning, a graphical model (GM) is a graph that represents independencies among random variables by a graph in which each node is a random variable, and the missing edges between the nodes represent conditional independencies.  of their operations using click and connect object-oriented icons and sophisticated rules written in simple, if-then style natural language phrases. Fault Expert extends the G2 environment specifically for intelligent fault management of distributed client/server environments A networking environment that is made up of clients and servers running applications designed for client/server architecture. See client/server. . Fault Expert can detect and filter events from any object within a distributed environment - including network devices and equipment, operating system operating system (OS)

components, or even applications. Then, using sophisticated rules and procedures, it reasons about the network, advises operators of probable root causes, and initiates automated corrective actions. In this way, Fault Expert adds a layer of intelligence to traditional network management platforms to help minimize costly downtime.
