Another move towards harmonization
Underwriters Laboratories has adopted UL 60079-7, in conformance with IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission, Geneva, Switzerland, www.iec.ch) An organization that sets international electrical and electronics standards founded in 1906. It is made up of national committees from over 60 countries.
IEC - International Electrotechnical Commission 60079-7. Except for inclusion of certain "U.S. deviations," the text includes the IEC requirements for design, construction, testing, and marking of apparatus having "increased safety 'e"' protection for explosive gas atmospheres.
UL has also revised UL 4, Standard for Armored Cable, to clarify ungrounded conductor color requirements and revise metric units for tensile strength.
In joint standards developments, the American National Standards Institute See ANSI.

No more trial-use ANSI standards
The American National Standards Institute's Essential Requirements for standards adoption has contained an Annex B allowing for issuance of an ANSI standard in draft form for trial use prior to its formal adoption.
In October, ANSI announced the elimination of the Annex, stating that no such adoptions would be allowed in future, and that any existing documents "labeled or promoted as 'Draft American National Standards for Trial Use' may no longer be labeled or promoted as such."
No reasons were given for the action, which came "in response to numerous inquiries and comments during 2008," according to ANSI.
Meanwhile, ANSI has reaffirmed ANSI/IEEE C37.24-2003 (R2008), Guide for Evaluating the Effect of Solar Radiation solar radiation,

Overexposure may result in sunburn, keratosis, skin cancer, or lesions associated with photosensitivity. on Outdoor Metal-Enclosed Switchgear The term switchgear, used in association with the electric power system, or grid, refers to the combination of electrical disconnects, fuses and/or circuit breakers used to isolate electrical equipment. .
Revisions have been adopted of two UL standards:
* ANSIAJL 4-2008, Standard for Safety for Armored Cable.
* ANSITUL 60079-7-2008 (adoption of IEC 60079 Part 7), Standard for Safety for Electrical Apparatus for Explosive Gas Atmospheres - Part 7: Increased Safety "e."
And finally, ANSI has issued ANSI/IEEE C37.2-2008, Standard Electrical Power System Device Function Numbers, Acronyms and Contact Designations.
