Standard Missile Co. delivers first missile.


CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 2, 1997--The U.S. Navy Wednesday accepted delivery of the first Standard Missile The Standard Missile is a type of surface-to-air missile (SAM) originally developed for the United States Navy (USN). ) produced by Standard Missile Co. (SMCo) of McLean, Va.

Previously, Standard Missiles were produced by either Raytheon Co. of Lexington, Mass., or Hughes Missile Systems Co. of Tucson, Ariz.

The delivery was marked by a ceremony in Chattanooga at the company's all up round facility which completes missile final assembly and test functions.

Chauncey P. Dewey, president and chief executive officer of SMCo, said: "This event culminates the successful integration of the efforts of two companies to minimize cost and maximize capability for the government. The Navy and allied fleets now have one-stop shopping for the proven Standard Missile family of weapons."

SMCo was established with the authorization of the U.S. Navy in 1995 by Raytheon and Hughes Aircraft Hughes Aircraft Company was a major aerospace and defense company founded by Howard Hughes. The group was based near Ballona Creek, in Culver City, California, USA, on the Pacific Coast.

Hughes Aircraft was acquired by General Motors in 1985.
 Co. to provide the U.S. Navy a single acquisition source for all Standard Missile business. The company is responsible for all aspects of Standard Missile design, engineering, production and depot level maintenance.
