Standard Microsystems Announces Two New System Controller Hub Devices for the Next Generation PC.

Business & Technology Editors

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 14, 2000

Standard Microsystems Corporation (SMSC SMSC Short Message Service Center
SMSC Standard Microsystems Corporation (New York)

) announced today the availability of its LPC (language) LPC - A variant of C designed ca 1988 to program LP MUDs. 47M13x and LPC47M14x System Controller Hub(TM) (SCH SCH School

) devices, designed specifically for the next generation of PCs using the Intel Accelerated Hub Architecture Same as Intel Hub Architecture. .

These devices expand on SMSC's recently announced concept of System Controller Hubs(TM) - the next generation Super I/O "Super I/O" is the name given to a class of I/O controller integrated circuits that began to be used on personal computer motherboards in the late 1980s. A super I/O chip combines interfaces for a variety of low-bandwidth devices.  whereby legacy I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

I/O - Input/Output
functionality is combined with other PC logic in the same chip.

Demand for Internet connectivity continues to drive the fastest growing segment of the PC market - consumer PCs. The industry is responding to this demand for simpler, lower-cost PCs with design initiatives that removes inefficient legacy components and provides for PCs that are easy to set up, easy to use, and easy to maintain. As the recognized leading supplier of Super I/O controller chips, SMSC is in the forefront of this effort with the introduction of these new System Controller Hub(TM) devices, targeting the legacy-reduced and legacy-free generation of PCs.

The main thrust of legacy reduction is the relocation of legacy components to newer, more efficient technologies - primarily Universal Serial Bus See USB.

(hardware, standard) Universal Serial Bus - (USB) An external peripheral interface standard for communication between a computer and external peripherals over an inexpensive cable using biserial transmission.

), requiring new PC designs to offer additional USB connections for peripheral devices. The design of SMSC's new LPC47M14x System Controller Hub(TM) responds to the need for additional USB ports with the inclusion of a four-port USB hub as well as complete Super I/O functionality - all in a single, 128-pin package. The USB hub built into the LPC47M14x presents up to four USB 1.1 specification compliant downstrean ports. The innovative design of the USB hub includes the ability to select the number of active downstream ports allowing cost effective design flexibilty demanded by PC2001 design specifications. The unique configuration of the LPC47M14x allows the PC architect to use any combination of legacy Super I/O functionality or USB connectivity to suit the particular PC design. To demonstrate industry acceptance, the LPC47M14x has been submitted to Windows Hardware Quality Labs (body, standard) Windows Hardware Quality Labs - (WHQL) A Microsoft body that produces and supports the Microsoft Hardware Compatibility Test kit for current Microsoft operating systems.  (WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs) A Microsoft facility that provides testing services for hardware and drivers for compliance with its operating systems. WHQL administers various logos that compliant vendors may reprint on their packages. ) for device certification.

SMSC's LPC47M13x is offered as a companion chip to the LPC47M14x to enable greater motherboard design flexibility. The LPC47M13x includes all the Super I/O functionality of the LPC47M14x, but without the four-port USB hub, and maintains pin compatibility of the I/O functions in the same 128-pin package. The pin compatibility allows the PC architect to create a common layout for the Super I/O and then choose the LPC47M14x with its USB hub, or substitute the lower cost LPC47M13x for PC designs not requiring the extra USB port support.

These System Controller Hub(TM) devices are sampling now, are fully supported with documentation and evaluation boards, and are available in production quantities. The LPC47M13x is priced at $5.95 per 10K units and the LPC47M14x is $7.20 per 10K units.

Data sheets for the LPC47M13x, and LPC47M14x, as well as technical information on SMSC's other products, is available on SMSC's web site at http://www.smsc.com.
