Stand-Out Sites in Frenzy to Court Small Businesses.


HUNDREDS of "dot-com (1) Refers to the period (dot) followed by the abbreviation of the commercial domain (.com) at the end of an Internet address. Since the .com domain is so widely used, the Internet became known as the "dot-com" world, and dot-com companies are those formed to offer services or " companies have raised millions of dollars in venture capital by promising investors they will profit by cashing in on the vibrant small-business market.

Of course, each site claims to be the ultimate and perfect resource for busy entrepreneurs who want to do everything from shop at major e-commerce sites to open a checking account or provide employees with affordable online training.

Even Amazon.com entered the mix recently by inviting small merchants to sell just about anything for a modest fee on its mega-site. The powerful U.S. Chamber of Commerce The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world's largest not-for-profit federation of businesses, representing more than 3 million businesses and organizations in the United States. As of 2003, the chamber was comprised of 3000 state and local chambers and 830 business associations.  is also in the game with its new www.chamberbiz.com site.

But small-business experts are not sure who will survive the predicted shakeout Shakeout

"We see a lot of companies that want to get a quick hit, but we don't see much real-time, one-on-one help online," said Alice Bredin, principal of Bredin Business Information, based in Manhattan. "The companies that are really willing to go through the pain of developing sites with true value will be the winners. The losers are the companies that make big promises, take the easy route, and don't add any value."

"We offer over 1,000 courses ranging from how to use Microsoft Word A full-featured word processing program for Windows and the Macintosh from Microsoft. Included in the Microsoft application suite, it is a sophisticated program with rudimentary desktop publishing capabilities that has become the most widely used word processing application on the market.  to learning better listening skills."

With password protection, owners and managers can monitor what employees are taking as well as track their progress on the site. Fees are billed to a company credit card.

Headlight.com has several marketing alliances and co-branded efforts with other business sites, including Compaq.

"Our courses are 75 percent to 90 percent cheaper than most courses," said Mellen. "They cost $15 to $150 per course, and take about half the time to complete, because it's all tailored to the individual."

All courses are taught online, so you need a relatively fast and reliable Internet connection.

"It's not about technology, it's that we pay attention to our customers," said Star, whose company operates as a broker-dealer, not as a bank (although accounts are insured by a combination of insurance policies).

"The response has been beyond my wildest expectations," said Star, who expects to close another round of financing in December.

So far, the company has about 1,000 customers in 40 states, and a handful of foreign countries.
