The island area of Sint Maarten (Dutch: Eilandgebied Sint Maarten will lift travel restrictions and open both sides of the half-Dutch, half-French island to visitors on Nov. 1, two weeks earlier than the latest targeted date of Nov. 15, according to according to prep. 1. Damage caused by Hurricane Luis on Sept. 5, followed by Hurricane Marilyn one week later, caused Richardson to restrict travel to the island to residents and visitors meeting certain criteria, including those owning timeshare units, property or businesses or assisting with relief efforts. Others currently permitted on island are non-residents visiting someone ill or attending a funeral or wedding. All visitors must have a return airline ticket valid for no longer than 30 days from the date of arrival.
