St. Louis Civic Progress companies commit to advance ticket purchase from TWA.


ST. LOUIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 13, 1995--Member companies of Civic Progress, an organization of the chief executive officers of St. Louis' leading corporations, have announced their commitment to prepurchase up to six months worth of travel from Trans World Airlines Trans World Airlines, commonly known as TWA, was a major American airline company that was acquired by American Airlines in April 2001. For many years it was headquartered at the Kansas City Downtown Airport, as well as midtown Manhattan in New York City.  to demonstrate their confidence in the airline's future.

The advance commitment represents nearly 11,000 business trips during that period for these companies, which will help St. Louis-based TWA TWA Time-weighted average, see there  as it continues to move forward with its financial restructuring.

"TWA is vital to the St. Louis economy," said Andrew E. Newman, chairman of Edison Brothers Stores Inc. and president of Civic Progress. "The airline made a strong commitment to St. Louis when it moved its headquarters here in 1994 and has made significant strides in improving both its finances and operations. This advance ticket purchase commitment is a demonstration of our confidence in TWA's new management team as it continues to complete its long-term financial restructuring."

"While these tickets do not represent incremental revenue to TWA, the commitment is a significant vote of confidence in our airline from some of our largest customers," added Robert A. Peiser, executive vice president of finance and chief financial officer of TWA.

TWA is the primary carrier from Lambert International Airport in St. Louis with more than 300 daily departing flights, representing roughly 70 percent of all St. Louis enplanements. St. Louis is not only headquarters to the nation's seventh-largest carrier, but also its primary hub.

Civic Progress has been working with the region's elected officials for more than six years to secure continued hub airline service in St. Louis through an organization called the St. Louis Partnership for Air Service.

"The hub is important to our city's future," Newman said. "Our members believe that the best way to assure hub service is to protect the long-term viability of TWA. We are impressed with TWA's commitment to service. Our support only further cements the already strong bond between TWA and the St. Louis business community."

Civic Progress members participating in the advance ticket purchase program include: Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc.; Boatmen's Bancshares Inc.; Brown Group Inc.; Edison Brothers Stores Inc.; Edward D. Jones Edward D. Jones, Sr. (July 29, 1893-October 10,1982) was an investment banker born in St. Louis.
