. Students will now be able to wirelessly access the entire university library, register for classes, communicate with faculty through an online portal and email, and have a more interactive relationship with their professors and fellow students. Students can wirelessly access these services on the Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan campuses today.

IBM and Cisco have a global strategic alliance, which offers higher education customers like St. John's University industry-leading, seamlessly integrated technology solutions. For the St. John's University Laptop Program, the two companies have drawn on their strengths in Internet infrastructure and personal computing to deliver a proven wireless access system.

IBM's leadership in wireless technology is based on superior performance, ease of use and enhanced security. All IBM ThinkPad notebooks are equipped with a dual-band Ultraconnect antenna - built into the display monitor - providing students with optimal wireless coverage and performance. Access Connections, a ThinkVantage technology, enables students to easily move between wired and wireless environments without having to reboot To reload the operating system, which restarts the computer. ) security coupled with the IBM Embedded Security Subsystem (ESS) provides students with unparalleled secure wireless connectivity. Through the IBM ThinkPad University, students can use the superior mobile and wireless technology to collaborate on assignments, research, seek insight and share expertise, virtually anytime, anywhere. ) drive and wireless connectivity.

For the campus-wide network, St. John's University installed Cisco Aironet 1200 Series Access Points strategically throughout the university to create a wireless infrastructure that provides seamless network access to their IBM ThinkPads. Supporting data rates of up to 11 Mbps today with upgradeability to 54 Mbps in the future, the Cisco Aironet 1200 Series extends end-to-end intelligent networking to the wireless network, delivering industry leading security, manageability and reliability. Furthermore, with the use of Cisco Aironet wireless LANs to create virtual class-rooms, St. John's University expects generating savings of $20 to $30 million in classroom building costs.

The St. John's University Laptop Program was also enabled through a network assessment and integration project completed last year with Cisco strategic alliance partner BearingPoint, Inc., a leading business consulting and systems integration firm.
