Inc., a global provider of security solutions that protect against data loss, system threats and Internet abuse, today advised users of its UpdateEXPERT(R) patch management The installation of patches from a software vendor onto an organization's computers. Patching thousands of PCs and servers is a major issue. A patch should be applied to test machines first before deployment, and the testing environments must represent all the users' PCs with their unique  and remediation solution to verify that they have installed Microsoft's most recent patches that address "Critical" and "Important" security flaws.

The patches, MS04-006 and MS04-007, protect systems from critical vulnerabilities that could open their networks to attacks.

MS04-007 is the most critical patch, which fixes a security flaw that could allow hackers to take complete control of a compromised system to install malicious programs, modify or delete data or create new administrative accounts. The MS04-007 patch corrects an unchecked buffer The lack of validity checking of the data that is written into a program buffer. Buffers are reserved areas in the program (in memory) that accept data from external sources. Unchecked buffers can cause all kinds of errors and erratic behavior.  in Microsoft's Abstract Syntax Notation One In telecommunications and computer networking, Abstract Syntax Notation One (ASN.1) is a standard and flexible notation that describes data structures for representing, encoding, transmitting, and decoding data.  (ASN (1) (Autonomous System Number) A unique identifier of an autonomous system on the Internet. Of the 65 thousand ASNs available, more than 30 thousand have been assigned to ISPs and NSPs. ISPs usually have only one ASN, but NSPs may have more than one. .1) Library, which provides a generic way of representing data across different applications, according to Microsoft.

The MS04-006 patch fixes vulnerability in the Windows Internet Naming Service (networking) Windows Internet Naming Service - (WINS) Software which resolves NetBIOS names to IP addresses.  (WINS), which could allow the launching of denial-of-service attacks on Windows 2003 servers, according to Microsoft.
