Patching thousands of PCs and servers is a major issue. A patch should be applied to test machines first before deployment, and the testing environments must represent all the users' PCs with their unique  and remediation solution to verify that they have installed Microsoft's most recent cumulative security patch A fix to a program that eliminates a vulnerability exploited by malicious hackers. The vulnerability exploited by the worm was first remediated by Microsoft patch MS01-020 (added to UpdateEXPERT June 22, 2001). A variant of the original Bugbear program from September 2002, the Bugbear.B worm began spreading on Tuesday, June 3.

The MS03-020 cumulative patch fixes a flaw that would enable a worm attachment to be automatically executed when the infected email is viewed. Caution is still recommended, as the Bugbear.B worm can also be spread if the attachment is double-clicked upon by a recipient of the email. However, added security is offered to users of Outlook 2000 post SP2 and Outlook XP SP1, as these versions include functionality to block potentially harmful attachment types. By default, users running either of these versions will have the attachment blocked automatically.

In order to take advantage of this added security, organizations running Microsoft Outlook For the e-mail and news client bundled with certain versions of Microsoft Windows, see .

This Microsoft patch was added to UpdateEXPERT's database on November 1, 2001. Microsoft Outlook 2000 post SP2 (Service Pack 2) and Microsoft Outlook XP SP1 (Service Pack 1) already have this functionality and do not require this patch.
