Spreading the good chews.

From Bible Gum to Testamints, from Scripture Cookies to Heaven's Best Chocolates, religious marketers know that "one does not live by bread alone" (Luke 4:4).

"It is hard for me to describe how much this gum draws the little ones young children.

Bible Gum comes in small cartons that have Bible verses printed on the inside. According to Life Lines, the Alaska-based company that markets the holy chewing gum, "Bible Gum, in its non-threatening, non-judgmental format, is a wonderful way to introduce the `scripturally threatened' individual to one of humanity's most powerful and revered historical and spiritual compilings."

Meanwhile, the makers of Scripture Cookies are working hard to become the Christian answer to those superstitious Chinese fortune cookies, and Heaven's Best Chocolates ("carved in the shape of four open Bibles") does its part to spread the good chews.

As for Testamints: "If your soul and mouth are pure, use these to heal those afflicted af·flict

To inflict grievous physical or mental suffering on.
