Spotlight on the scientific review committee.


Pamela K Levangie, PT, DSc, a 1993 recipient of a Doctoral Research Grant from the Foundation, has been a member of the Scientific Review Committee since 2004.

Levangie's extensive resume includes 23 years on Boston University's physical therapy faculty. For 12 of those years, she was the Program Coordinator for the Master of Science in Physical Therapy Program. In 1991, Levangie's teaching skills were recognized by the Boston University Chapter of the Golden Key when they named her Teacher of the Year.

Since 1996, Levangie has been on the faculty of Sacred Heart University Anthony J. Cernera, Ph.D., has been president of Sacred Heart University for 18 years.

Sacred Heart University is known for its strong musical roots, and is well known for the Pioneer Bands. SHU is the second largest Catholic university in New England.
, where her primary responsibility is teaching anatomy and kinesiology content. In 1999, she received Sacred Heart University's Faculty Scholarship Award.

Levangie is co-author of the kinesiology text, Joint Structure and Function: A Comprehensive Analysis, currently in its fourth edition, a staple text in many physical therapy curricula. She also serves as a curriculum consultant to other physical therapist education programs on kinesiology, research, content, and problem-based learning problem-based learning Medical education An instruction strategy in which groups of students are presented with clinical problems without prior study or lectures. See Cooperative learning. . A survivor of breast cancer, Levangie is currently pursuing her research interest in the area of long-term effects of surgery and radiation on shoulder complex function. Levangie is a nationally known advisor and speaker. She also serves on the Editorial Board of Physical Therapy and Physiotherapy Research International (Sussex, England).

In 2001, APTA APTA American Physical Therapy Association.  recognized Dr Levangie with a Baethke-Carlin Award for Excellence in Academic Teaching.

Riolo's career started at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut where she taught in the Pbysical Therapy Program from 1989 to 1994. During this time, she also served as a consultant physical therapist to a variety of local hospitals and home care services. In 1994, she joined the faculty of Emory University School of Medicine as Professor in the Division of Physical Therapy and the Division of Geriatrics geriatrics (jĕrēă`trĭks), the branch of medicine concerned with conditions and diseases of the aged. Many disabilities in old age are caused by or related to the deterioration of the circulatory system (see arteriosclerosis), e.g.  and Gerontology gerontology: see geriatrics. . While in Atlanta, Riolo also was Research Scientist at the Veterans Affairs Rehabilitation Research and Development Center in Geriatric Rehabilitation. Riolo received several awards during her time at the Veterans Affairs Center, including the Advanced Career Development Award 1998-2001, the Distinguished Service Award in 1998 and 1999, and the Most Outstanding Presentation Award in 2000.

From 2001 to 2004, Riolo was on the faculty at the University of Oklahoma University of Oklahoma, abbreviated OU, is a coeducational public research university located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. Founded in 1890, it existed in Oklahoma Territory near Indian Territory 17 years before the two became the state of Oklahoma.  Health Sciences Center. Currently, she is Professor and Chair at Indiana University Department of Physical Therapy. She was recognized with the Jack Allison Memorial Lecturer Award from the University of Minnesota (body, education) University of Minnesota - The home of Gopher.

In addition to being an accomplished researcher, Riolo serves as a manuscript reviewer for 9 publications, including Physical Therapy and the Journal of American Geriatrics Society The American Geriatrics Society (AGS): a professional society founded on June 11, 1942 for doctors practicing geriatric medicine. Among the founding physicians were Dr. Ignatz Leo Nascher, who coined the term "geriatrics," Dr. Malford W. .

Kathryn E Roach, PT, PhD, a Foundation doctoral scholarship recipient in 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1991, has served on the Scientific Review Committee since 1999. Currently, she is the Committee's Chair.

The university has recognized her skills with several awards: the Faculty Initiative Award in 1994 and the Faculty Achievement Award in both 1996 and 1998. In 1996, she was awarded APTA's Eugene Michels New Investigator Award.

Roach has published extensively in the area of clinical outcome assessment and contributed to the development of APTA's clinical performance instruments. She serves as a manuscript reviewer for 5 publications, including Physical Therapy and the Journal of Orthopaedics and Sports Physical Therapy.
