Sportsmanship woes.


I couldn't agree more with Tom Farrell's views on promoting sportsmanship in interscholastic in·ter·scho·las·tic  
adj.
Existing or conducted between or among schools.

 athletics in your June issue ("A Toss-up: A Sportsmanship Banner or an Even Playing Field?").

The experience in my school district mirrors the situation he describes. I could have written the same article.

We make a tremendous effort to educate the public on what is acceptable behavior and what is not. Our administrators pay a big price to enforce sportsmanship. Like Farrell's district, ours is criticized because we do not allow our patrons and parents to behave the way many of our opponents are allowed to.

While this seems like a losing battle at times, I believe it is worth the effort. If schools don't take a stand against rude, crass, inconsiderate in·con·sid·er·ate

, but they have more influence than any other organization in our society. Churches, Boy and Girl Scouts Girl Scouts, recreational and service organization founded (1912) in Savannah, Ga., by Mrs. Juliette Gordon Low (1860–1927). It was originally modeled after the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, organizations created in Great Britain by Sir Robert Baden-Powell during , etc., have influence but not with nearly as many people as public schools.

I applaud Farrell for speaking out on this issue.
