Sports stars help raise money for Phipps Houses. (Transcripts).Nationally known sports legends joined chefs from some of New York'smost popular restaurants at Slate Billiards billiards, any one of a number of games played with a tapered, leather-tipped stick called a cue and various numbers of balls on a rectangular, cloth-covered slate table with raised and cushioned edges. Club night for "Sports Cookfest," benefiting youth programs run by the Phipps Community Development Corporation, the human services affiliate of Phipps Houses. Guests got the chance to lock "cues" with famous athletes, including "The Black Widow black widow, poisonous spider of the genus Latrodectus, found throughout North and South America and common in the SW United States. The name derives from the fact that the female, like those of many other spider species, may eat the male after mating. ," world class billiards champion Jeanette Lee. "I'd like to express my deepest gratitude to all involved in Sports Cookfest this year. The chefs, the restaurant owners, the athletes, our emcee Jane Hanson, the management and staff at Slate, and the hundreds of supporters who made this fundraiser a success," said Adam Weinstein, president of Phipps Houses. "The money raised this evening will develop and expand our youth programs at Phipps centers, including job training, educational and recreational programs, and career development." Other sports stars in attendance included former NY Giants running back Ottis Anderson, former NJ Nets star Mike Bantom, former NY Giants great Jim Burt, NY Giants tight end Howard Cross, and former LA Clipper Steffond Johnson.
