Roach's previous book was Stiff: the Curious Lives of Human Cadavers. Her considerable curiosity and biting wit are evident in this latest examination of the existence of the human soul. Her research reaches back to centuries-old questionable treatises, religious beliefs, to modern-day fortunetellers and the pronouncements of mediums and charlatans, and even into honored halls of academia all over the world. Her work touches on such matters as death, near-death experiences near-death experience, phenomenon reported by some people who have been clinically dead, then returned to life. Descriptions of the experience differ slightly in detail from person to person, but usually share some basic elements: a feeling of being outside one's , and otherworldly apparitions. There are even some gross-out anecdotes regarding that mysterious matter known as ectoplasm ectoplasm
