Following its highly successful 2003 festival season distinguished by critical acclaim and record ticket sales, Spoleto Festival USA was called "one of the rare festivals to mix up the art forms and celebrate eclecticism" by The Washington Post. Spoleto Festival USA continues this tradition with a diverse array of over 130 performances for its 2004 season. Spanning three continents and more than 400 years of opera composition, the festival's 2004 operas are The Peony Pavilion, written in 1598 by Tang Xianzu; Vincenzo Bellini's 1830 bel canto gem I Capuleti e i Montecchi I Capuleti e i Montecchi (The Capulets and the Montagues) is an Italian opera by Vincenzo Bellini. The libretto by Felice Romani was a reworking of a the story of Romeo and Juliet for an opera by Nicola Vaccai called Giulietta e Romeo. ; Richard Strauss's 1916 Ariadne auf Naxos Ariadne auf Naxos (Ariadne on Naxos) is an opera by Richard Strauss with German libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. It was first performed at the Hoftheater, Stuttgart, on October 25, 1912. , and a concert version of Tom Johnson's 1972 The Four Note Opera. Called "one of the major cultural events of the end of the 20th century" by Le Monde, The Peony Pavilion will receive its final performances at the 2004 Spoleto Festival USA.
