ROCKVILLE, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 30, 2003

SmartBits System Test the Capabilities of Cisco Next Generation

Gigabit Ethernet Modules

Spirent Communications'(TM) (NYSE NYSE

See: New York Stock Exchange
: SPM SPM - Sequential Parlog Machine ) (LSE LSE - Language Sensitive Editor : SPT) new SmartBits(R) TeraMetrics XD modules were used in the world's largest Gigabit Ethernet test to date, the company announced today. The (a)test results, published by European Advanced Network Test Center (EANTC EANTC European Advanced Networking Test Center ), detail the functionality and performance of next generation modules and features for Cisco's flagship switch, the Catalyst 6500 series.

Using Spirent's new TeraMetrics XD Gigabit Ethernet modules on its SmartBits Test System, EANTC emulated 410 Enterprise Gigabit ports and 32 ports of 10 Gigabits Ethernet. The new SmartBits XD systems can scale even further to 768 ports, enabling customers to emulate larger, more complex networks in a controlled lab environment. The SmartBits system also can be easily expanded to test interworking (standard) interworking - Systems or components, possibly from different origins, working together to perform some task. Interworking depends crucially on standards to define the interfaces between the components.  with 10 Gigabit Ethernet, Packet over Sonet A metropolitan area network (MAN) or wide area network (WAN) transport technology that carries IP packets directly over SONET transmission without any data link facility such as ATM in between.  up to 9.6Gbps, and ATM LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. , MAN and WAN systems.

EANTC, an internationally recognized test lab providing test services for manufacturers, service providers and enterprises, conducted the performance tests in Spirent's state of the art SmartLab in Calabasas, Calif. Spirent's dual media functionality enabled EANTC to cut their testing time and lab space in half, since the TeraMetrics XD modules provide dual media connections on each test port that can test a mix of 10/100/1000Mbps Copper and 1 Gigabit Ethernet Fiber.

"EANTC measured the performance of a fully loaded Cisco Catalyst 6500 under several real world scenarios," said Gabriele Schrenk, managing director of EANTC. "Spirent's SmartBits system allowed us to emulate large IPv4 and IPv6 networks and measure performance with the presence of control plane traffic like routing and MPLS (1) (MultiProtocol Lambda Switching) The earlier name for GMPLS. See GMPLS.

(2) (MultiProtocol Label Switching) A standard from the IETF for including routing information in the packets of an IP network.
."

In addition to high scalability and available dual media functionality, Spirent's SmartBits TeraMetrics XD modules, can simulate and check:

-- Hundreds of millions of IP flows;

-- Thousands of VLANs;

-- Complex, routing and MPLS scenarios; and

-- Demanding Web and security applications.

"Spirent's SmartBits was chosen for this test because it provides the highest quality test methodology standards and is the only system that can truly meet the most demanding challenges of thoroughly testing next generation network devices at terabit per second A terabit per second (Tbit/s or Tbps) is a unit of data transfer rate equal to 1,000 gigabits per second, 1,000,000 megabits per second, 1,000,000,000 kilobits per second, or 1,000,000,000,000 bits per second.  scale," said Mark Fishburn, vice president of technical strategy for Spirent Communications. "This test performed by EANTC represents another milestone in the industry -- not just in the terabit per second scale of the demonstration but in the complexity of routed traffic represented through the lab network."
