The second largest city in the state, it is a distribution, wholesale, and industrial center for an area that yields fruit, dairy products, farm produce, , MI: Eerdmans Books for Young Readers, 2004. 32 pp. $16.00. Eileen Spinelli has written a delightful picture book that combines humor humor, according to ancient theory, any of four bodily fluids that determined man's health and temperament. Hippocrates postulated that an imbalance among the humors (blood, phlegm, black bile, and yellow bile) resulted in pain and disease, and that good health was  with historical fiction. This amusing story begins in Virginia, where Emmadine, a cow, wants to transcend her ordinary life. She wants to do something interesting that she can later share with her grandcows, so she volunteers to travel to the South Pole South Pole, southern end of the earth's axis, lat. 90° S. It is distinguished from the south magnetic pole. The South Pole was reached by Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian explorer, in 1911. See Antarctica.  on one of Admiral Byrd's expeditions. (The famed explorer really did bring livestock on one of his expeditions.) The colorful and fuzzy illustrations provided by Slavin capture this exciting journey for a special cow. Emmadine's adventures will keep the reader spellbound throughout. Ages 3 up. Reviewed by Rose B. Jones, The University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg
