) today announced a contract for three flexComm(TM) SDR-3000 software defined radio A wireless terminal (phone, PDA, etc.) that is reconfigurable via software. It enables wireless devices to be easily updated to new or later versions of the air interface and allows multiple interfaces to be supported.  (SDR See software defined radio. ) platforms and related engineering services to Lockheed Martin for research, development and prototyping of advanced satellite communications applications. These applications will offer improved performance under stressing channel conditions and are designed for future net-centric space systems that will support Defense Department and other government organizations.

The SDR-3000 is a heterogeneous processing platform incorporating Xilinx(R) field programmable gate arrays, IBM and Freescale(TM) PowerPC(TM) processors and Texas Instruments digital signal processors. Software development tools include Spectrum's quicComm(TM) hardware abstraction layer (operating system) Hardware Abstraction Layer - (HAL) The layer of Microsoft Windows NT where they have isolated their assembly language code.  to facilitate algorithm partitioning and programming and a Software Communications Architecture The Software Communications Architecture (SCA) is an open architecture framework that tells designers how elements of hardware and software are to operate in harmony within a software defined radio.
