Spectra Logic supports StorageTek's 9710 for large scale backup of UNIX and RDBMS data using Alexandria Backup Librarian.BOULDER, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 21, 1996--Spectra Logic (Boulder) announced the completion of support for the Storage Technology Corp. TimberWolf 9710 Automated Cartridge System with its Alexandria(tm) Backup Librarian software. The combination will be marketed to IS departments with demanding backup requirements for both networked open systems and Very Large Data Bases (VLDBs). StorageTek's TimberWolf 9710 is built using best-of-class components from the firm's WolfCreek 9360 and PowderHorn 9310 libraries. Combined with either Quantum's DLT (Digital Linear Tape) A magnetic tape technology originally developed by Digital for its VAX line. The technology was later sold to Quantum, which makes it available to other manufacturers. DLT uses half-inch, single-hub cartridges similar to IBM's 3480/3490/3590 line. drive technology or StorageTek's Twin Peaks 4890 36-track tape drive, the result is a cost-effective, incrementally expandable library. In its maximum DLT configuration, the 9710 manages 588 tape cartridges and 10 tape drives, for an 11.76 Terabyte capacity (uncompressed) and aggregate throughput of 15 MB/Second (uncompressed). The largest TimberWolf 9710 with 4890 drives manages up to 588 tape cartridges and six drives. Spectra Logic's Alexandria software provides client/server backup of UNIX UNIX Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics). filesystems and online backup of Oracle, Informix and Sybase databases. It was designed to provide completely unattended "lights out" backup using automated tape library hardware. Its performance, extensibility, security and sophisticated media management capabilities have made it the software of choice for large scale UNIX networks and VLDBs. Alexandria has achieved backup rates exceeding 115 GB/hour writing to multiple DLT drives on a multi-processor machine and higher rates should be possible with the right hardware. Alexandria is supported as a client and a server on more than 20 different hardware platforms, including Sequent, Pyramid, Sun(Solaris & SunOS), HP9000 (700 and 800), IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) RS/6000 and SP, AT&T GIS (NCR (NCR Corporation, Dayton, OH, www.ncr.com) A technology company specializing in financial terminal transactions, retail systems and data warehousing. The 9710 library offers both a SCSI-2 and an ACSLS ACSLS Automatic Cartridge System Library Software ACSLS Automated Cartridge System Library Server Interface. Spectra Logic's support will initially be limited to SCSI-2 (which is more popular in the UNIX environment), with ACSLS support following later this summer. Alexandria will support the 14 cartridge access port and will support the 9710 in all configurations, from one to ten drives, from 252 to 588 cartridges. "The 9710's ability to scale matches that of the Alexandria software," said Nathan C. Thompson, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization.
