Specialty clinics agree to build near new hospital.

Byline: Tim Christie The Register-Guard

A network of medical specialists has agreed to build a new medical office building next to PeaceHealth's RiverBend hospital in Gateway in Springfield.

Northwest Speciality Clinics, a network of nine practices with more than 50 physicians, will construct the building on land leased from PeaceHealth, said Brian Terrett, a PeaceHealth spokesman. The doctors are the first to commit to locating their clinics at RiverBend.

Six of the nine practices currently have offices in the Physicians & Surgeons buildings at 1200 Hilyard St., which are owned by PeaceHealth and adjacent to Sacred Heart Medical Center Sacred Heart Medical Center may refer to:

Northwest Specialty Clinics also is talking with other specialists and ancillary service providers about leasing space in the building, Terrett said.

Terrett said that PeaceHealth and Northwest Specialty Clinics have signed a letter of intent, a precursor to a ground lease agreement. The building has not yet been designed, so it's not yet known how big it will be, but it will be located as close as possible to the new hospital, he said. The doctors hope to break ground by next October, he said.

"The goal is to be close enough that people, both physicians and patients and their families, could be in the building and get right into the hospital," he said.

PeaceHealth's plan for Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend includes a number of medical office buildings on the campus next to the hospital.

PeaceHealth owns about 170 acres at RiverBend, controlling not just the land on which the hospital will be built but the surrounding acreage as well. That means any doctors who want their offices close to the hospital will be doing business with PeaceHealth.

Having an agreement with Northwest Speciality Clinics could motivate other medical practices to follow suit, Terrett said.

Construction of the $350 million hospital began earlier this year and is scheduled to be completed by winter 2008, followed by an opening in late spring or early summer, Terrett said.
