Special report: Going global.

A directory of international list and database brokers and managers, postal distribution services, payment processors, and publications on international direct mail and marketing

Recounting the highlights of the March 4-5, 2002 Publisher's Multinational Direct Conference in New York City New York City: see New York, city.
New York City

City (pop., 2000: 8,008,278), southeastern New York, at the mouth of the Hudson River. The largest city in the U.S.
, The Newsletter on Newsletters (March 15) reported that speaker after speaker emphasized that there's "a lot of money beyond one's domestic subscriber base."

"Australia's very hot," one marketer observed, and others said that the successful introduction of the euro The introduction of the euro took place principally between 31 December 1998, when the exchange rates between the euro and legacy currencies in the Eurozone became fixed, and early 2002, when euro notes and coins were introduced and the legacy currencies withdrawn.  in the European Union European Union (EU), name given since the ratification (Nov., 1993) of the Treaty of European Union, or Maastricht Treaty, to the

bodes well for an improved--and possibly more heterogenous--business climate in that information-hungry part of the world. Despite--or perhaps because of--its current economic challenges, Asia and the Pacific Rim Pacific Rim, term used to describe the nations bordering the Pacific Ocean and the island countries situated in it. In the post–World War II era, the Pacific Rim has become an increasingly important and interconnected economic region.  are also information- hungry.

Al Goodloe, editor and publisher of Publisher's Multinational Direct and sponsor of the conference, pointed out that newsletter and specialized information publishers "can expect a 20 to 40 percent increase over domestic circulation. If, f or example, your domestic base is 1,000, you're ignoring 200 to 400 international names who will subscribe."

Goodloe also said that many publishers- especially smaller ones--unwisely hesitate to market internationally. "They claim they have just a small staff and don't have time to go international." That's a mistake, he said, that can be remedied by careful planning and the assignment of even just one staff person to focus on international marketing.

Start small, if need be. Learn the lists. Learn the countries. Learn to tinker with your promotion packages with an eye on each country. It will pay off.

The companies, services, and resources listed here can help you do just that.

Bon voyage!
