CHICAGO -- The Illinois Biotechnology Industry Organization--better known around the world as iBIO([R])announced today the winner of the 2007 John W. Maitland Jr. Biotech Leadership Award recipient: Illinois Speaker of the House, Representative Michael J. Madigan.

The award presentation is Wednesday, October 10, 2007, at the Sangamo Club, located at 227 E. Adams Street, Springfield from 6-9 p.m., and celebrates Speaker Madigan's service to Illinois' growing biotechnology industry.

In 2007, Speaker Madigan created the Bio-Technology Committee in the Illinois House of Representatives The Illinois House of Representatives is the lower house of the Illinois General Assembly, the state legislature of the U.S. state of Illinois. The body was created by the first Illinois Constitution adopted in 1818. . The creation of the new Committee was noted nation wide in biotechnology forums and marked Illinois as a state that takes seriously the promise of life sciences research and commercialization. It also creates an official section of the State government focused on the concerns of the biotechnology sector.

The iBIO John W. Maitland Jr Biotechnology Leadership award was created by iBIO to recognize the roll that elected and appointed government officials play in the development and advancement of the Illinois biotechnology industry. The iBIO Maitland award is named for the retired State Senator Noun 1. state senator - a member of a state senate

 who was revered by his colleagues and who championed life sciences development in Illinois.
