Speak softly and kick out the jams: queer-inclusive experimental rock band Erase Errata lets the music do the talking.

The four members of Erase Errata Erase Errata is a band from San Francisco, California. Although they are a contemporary band, their music is often associated with the post-punk movement.

They often name experimentalists such as Captain Beefheart, The Fall, and The Minutemen as inspirations.

"Crystal Palace is a real place, and it's also a state of mind," vocalist Jenny Hoysten says cryptically.

Research turns up a clue: A Crystal Palace was built in London in 1851 to display the products of the British Empire British Empire, overseas territories linked to Great Britain in a variety of constitutional relationships, established over a period of three centuries. The establishment of the empire resulted primarily from commercial and political motives and emigration movements . Is this glass exhibition hall a metaphor for the precarious postboom culture of the band's Bay Area home, or even for America in an uncertain period of global expansion? Well, such fragile walls had better look out for Erase Errata. The liner notes liner notes

for its debut album, 2001's Other Animals, proclaimed, "We are the masons for the gated communities"; two years later the band continues to pose a threat to complacency everywhere.

Erase Errata's steady, danceable beats and knife-sharp guitar parts have attracted a devoted following in the noise-rock world while drawing support from eminent groups like the Ex and Sonic Youth. The band got its start in the West Coast's queer arts scene, but its members seldom draw deliberate attention to their identifies. In fact, their concerts--in which they wear matching outfits like fuzzy bear costumes or multicolored knit jumpsuits--invite audiences to focus on the band as an artistic unit rather than a collection of individual personalities. "I don't think any of us wants to draw any lines," Hoysten says. "I am a lesbian; Sara's queer. It's definitely not as meaningful in some places as in others."

It's not that the band disavows identity-based influences. Jaffe sees being a girl in the male-dominated world of experimental rock as a political act. And Hoysten embraces the power of being out onstage in remote locations. "It's always important for me to be who I am," she says. "We foster an environment at our shows where if you are gay, straight, or whatever, nobody's going to judge you or beat you up because of who you have sex with or who you think is hot."
