Spatial Selects Winners of First Annual 3D InterOp Model Contest.

Top Designers Receive Cash Prizes Totaling $8500

WESTMINSTER, Colo. -- Spatial Corp Spatial Corporation was founded in 1986, and had one main product: ACIS, the first commercially available 3D modeling kernel. Through subsequent years, Spatial added products to its portfolio that enabled ISVs mostly in the CAD/CAM industries, to build applications. ., a market-leading provider of 3D components, today announced the winners of its first annual 3D InterOp Model Contest, who received a total of $8500 in cash prizes as well as commemorative plaques.

To win, the models had to demonstrate innovative use of CAD design, assembly and feature modeling, dimensioning, and tolerancing. Entries could be submitted in CATIA A family of 2D and 3D CAD programs from IBM. CATIA was one of the first CAD programs to provide 3D solid modeling. The program was developed by Dassault Systems, a French aerospace company. ([R]) V4, CATIA V5, Autodesk Inventor([R]), SolidWorks, Pro/Engineer([R]), and Unigraphics formats, as well as the standards STEP and IGES (Initial Graphics Exchange Specification) An ANSI file format that is system independent and also intended for human interpretation. Evolving out of the U.S. . Screen shots of the winning models can be viewed at www.spatial.com/model_contest.

Tim Renton's entry of a Toyota GT-One race car was chosen for first prize ($5000) due to its complexity of surface types and his exceptional use of advanced modeling techniques. Tim crafted the design in SolidWorks by measuring points along a 1:24 scale model using a vernier vernier (vûr`nēr), auxiliary scale, either straight or an arc of a circle, designed to slide along a fixed scale. Its unit divisions, usually smaller than those on the fixed scale, permit a far more precise reading.  caliper caliper

"Only since the advent of personal computer-based CAD 3D modeling programs have I been able to actually design the airplane." The model has over 40 large assemblies and complex mechanics. Hal would like to find commercial investors to produce the plane.

The third place win ($1000) went to two individuals, Ooi Wei Kheun and Lin Shao Dun of Singapore for their SolidWorks model of the Singapore Flyer, a circular viewing tower currently under construction in Singapore. The model won for its scope, completeness, and quality of its animations, which detail the entire construction process.
