Dr. Nathaniel McCormick, an officer in the Epidemic Intelligence Service The Epidemic Intelligence Service is a program of the United States' Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Established in 1951 due to biological warfare concerns arising from the Korean War, it has become a hands-on two-year postgraduate training program in epidemiology, with  at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), agency of the U.S. Public Health Service since 1973, with headquarters in Atlanta; it was established in 1946 as the Communicable Disease Center. , has just set up a program at St. Raphael's Hospital in Maryland to identify outbreaks of unusual diseases. When a 31-year-old woman is brought in with flu-like symptoms, no one is alarmed at first. When her condition deteriorates and more victims arrive, McCormick investigates. Of course, there is more here than a virulent outbreak: there are nefarious characters, strange connections with his former professors, an old girlfriend, a corporation using porcine porcine /por·cine/ (por´sin) pertaining to swine.

As usual, Brick is outstanding as he brings all the characters to life, using different voices for all. Compelling listening. Fans of Michael Crichton, Robin Cook, and Michael Palmer
