Spanish-language broadcaster tops the radio band: Ranchera music format sends station climbing the chart.

The Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  radio world was jolted earlier this year when a Spanish-language station, KLAX-FM, topped the fall Arbitron listener ratings. No Spanish-language station had ever held the top Arbitron spot. And for the year, KLAX-FM has emerged atop The List of the 25 largest radio stations in Los Angeles <noinclude> List of radio stations in the Los Angeles/Orange County market (Arbitron #2):

KLAX-FM dethroned KOST-FM, which fell to second place, trailing KLAX KLAX Los Angeles International Airport (ICAO Code)  6.4 to 5.2 for its 1992-93 listener share average. In revenue terms, KABC-AM was the leader with $31 million. However, 13 of the stations on The List declined to report their revenues.

There was only one other station in addition to KLAX-FM to crack the top 25 for the first time. KJLH-FM made The List at No. 25.

Stations showing significant gains included KROQ-FM, moving up six places to No. 7, and KLSX-FM, going from 14th to No. 8.

KLAX hit the airwaves Aug. 1, 1992, with a new Ranchera The ranchera is a genre of the traditional music of Mexico. The Spanish Broadcasting System-owned station took off immediately, and the increase in listeners enabled the station to boost its ad rates.

Ad rates were $100 for a spot a year ago, but now the station is fetching $500 to $700 a spot. Station officials estimate they will finish 1993 with revenues around $10 million.

"We are seeing diversity in this marketplace, and that trend will continue," KOST General Manager Howard Neal observed. "As time goes on, there will be a continuous shift, but right now ethnic radio is doing well and KLAX is at the top of the heap. The station has probably done more for ethnic radio than any other in raising the revenue ceiling for a Spanish station."

There are seven Hispanic stations in the market and five made The List's 25, including KLVE-FM, KTNQ-AM, KWKW-AM and KKHJ-AM.

Neal is also manager of KFI-AM which jumped from No. 19 to No. 12 with its talk radio format.
