MCLEAN, Va. -- Spacenet Inc. announced that the company celebrated its 25th anniversary providing satellite and communication services to enterprise, government, small office and residential customers. In addition to its anniversary, Spacenet has achieved another important milestone by reaching 100,000 network endpoints with its satellite and hybrid terrestrial network services mostly for enterprise and government customers.

Spacenet was founded in October 1981 as a satellite services provider as an offshoot of the Southern Pacific Railroad company. The company became GTE Spacenet Corporation in 1983, and was later acquired by GE Americom, a subsidiary of General Electric, in 1994. In 1998, Spacenet became a wholly owned subsidiary of Gilat Satellite Networks Ltd., a leading provider of technology and services for satellite-based communications networks, and it has remained a substantial component of Gilat's business since that time.

Spacenet has a history of industry innovation, including the introduction of hybrid DSL/VSAT enterprise networks in 2004, and the launch of its Connexstar shared-hub services for business and government users in 2002.
