 lost one of its "pioneers" in May 2005, when Janice McCurnin, from Tucson, passed away after years of teaching and serving the local, state and national associations. Her accolades are too numerous to mention here, but they can be summed up by saying that she was the first MTNA MTNA Music Teachers National Association
MTNA Middle Tennessee Nursery Association (McMinnville, Tennessee) 
 national teacher of the year The National Teacher of the Year is a professional award in the United States. The program began in 1952, as a project by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), and aims to reward excellence in teaching. It is sponsored by ING. , in 2001.

What greater tribute to McCurnin, who mentored and encouraged many teachers to become certified, than the efforts of the current ASMTA Certification Chair Elaine Dyches, NCTM NCTM National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
NCTM Nationally Certified Teacher of Music
NCTM North Carolina Transportation Museum
NCTM National Capital Trolley Museum
NCTM Nationally Certified in Therapeutic Massage
, (ASMTA 2005 teacher of the year). Within the past year, three members have become certified, one has finished testing, two are in the process and three have begun the process. Kudos to Dyches and the ASMTA board that set aside funds several years ago to pay for the first ten members who became certified.

At least 10 state officers have begun new assignments for the 2005-2006 year. There is a nice mixture of officers from different generations and areas of the state--great efforts will be made to bridge geographical and generational gaps. The new officers already are diligently working at their new positions, planning an exciting year and continuing the progress made by outgoing board members, especially June Chow-Tyne, immediate past president.
