Southwest Behavioral Health Increases Residential Capacity for Persons with HIV/AIDS by Adding Four Homes to Housing Program.

The City of Phoenix has awarded Southwest Behavioral Health Behavioral health was first used in the 1980's to name the combination of the fields mental health and substance abuse.  SBH's Cheryl Cuyler, vice president of community integration and recovery services, who oversees the Housing Opportunities for Persons With AIDS, or "HOPWA HOPWA Housing Opportunities for Persons With AIDS " program, "I am delighted the city awarded the homes to SBH. Last year we provided financial or residential assistance to over 500 individuals and families through our programs funded by the City of Phoenix and HOPWA. The acquisition of these sites will coincide with Arizona's AIDS Walk AIDS Walk is a walkathon fundraiser that raises money to combat the AIDS epidemic. The funds raised from AIDS Walks usually benefit a local AIDS service organization (such as Gay Men's Health Crisis or the AIDS Project Los Angeles), which provide services and advocacy for local  this week." SBH has been a prominent supporter of the AIDS Walk locally, with more than 50 staff members and residents volunteering for the event last year. "We're very dedicated to serving and housing folks with HIV/AIDS. The acquisition of the additional housing will keep the much needed housing available to the community," she added.

SBH has operated housing programs specifically for individuals and families for more than seven years. Some housing is for two years or less, while other units are more permanent. With the addition of the four homes, SBH can house up to 84 individuals.
