Southern Peru Ltd. Chooses Fluor Daniel for Copper Concentrator Expansion Project
Fluor Daniel's Mining & Minerals operating company is providing engineering, procurement and construction services. SPL's modernization and expansion program of the Cuajone mine and concentrator will be achieved in two phases, increasing concentrator throughput from 64,000 standard ton per day (stpd) to 154,000 stpd. Employment is expected to peak at 1,000, and the first phase to 90,000 stpd is targeted for completion by the end of 1998.
"Fluor Daniel is pleased to have been chosen by SPL to undertake this expansion project," said Phil Asherman, president of Fluor Daniel's Mining & Minerals operating company. "Having worked on the initial Cuajone copper complex in 1975, we have a long-standing interest in continuing our association with SPL at Cuajone."
SPL is owned by ASARCO (54 percent), the Marmon Group (22 percent) and Phelps Dodge (16 percent), with the remaining 8 percent of the company stock held on the U.S. and Lima stock markets. SPL operates two mines, concentrator facilities, a copper smelter and refinery in the south of Peru.
