Southern Medical Journal CME Topic: migraine headaches.

The following section was designed for physicians in all specialties, especially those in primary care. The Southern Medical Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians. This CME activity was planned and produced in accordance with the ACCME Essentials. Purpose and Objectives

Migraine headaches affect approximately 6% of men and 18% of women in the United States, and cost approximately $13 billion annually. Despite the prevalence of this disorder, migraines continue to be misdiagnosed. Research is ongoing into the pathophysiology of migraines, evaluation of nonpharmacologic treatment modalities, assessment of new drug therapies, and validation of headache guidelines. After completing this activity, participants should be better prepared to evaluate and treat patients with migraine headaches, and should be more informed concerning the various types of headaches, treatment options, and management strategies.
