The Alabama Music Teachers Association (AMTA AMTA American Music Therapy Association. AMTA, n See American Music Therapy Association. ) will celebrate its 50th anniversary this upcoming June 6-8, 2002, through a number of conference activities and through exciting appearances by guest artist Jose Feghali and clinician Maurice Hinson, NCTM. AMTA has recently established a tax-exempt endowed fund, interest from which will be used to support the activities of state conferences, specifically to assist in funding the annual guest artist and guest clinician. Also, some of the interest eventually may be used to bolster the student scholarships. AMTA proudly continues the Composer Commissioning Program (Dorothy Hindman of Birmingham-Southern, 2002 recipient) and the Teacher of the Year Award (Mary Jane Scruggs of Mobile, 2001 recipient). Georgia MTA (GMTA "Great minds think alike." See digispeak. ) has experienced a challenging and productive year. Our membership stands at 744, with 717 students participating in the In-State Spring auditions and forty-one participants in the MTNA MTNA Music Teachers National Association MTNA Middle Tennessee Nursery Association (McMinnville, Tennessee) competitions. Georgia had eight winners in the Southern Division Competitions. Registration for our state convention was 170. This year's concert artist, Frank Wiens, gave an outstanding concert and master class. The advocacy session focused on the circumstances that forced one of our members to procure a Special Land Use Permit to continue teaching piano lessons in her home, and ways in which to deal with similar future situations. We are proud to claim Dr. R. Wayne Gibson, NCTM, MTNA president, as a GMTA member, and we continue to enjoy the benefits of our Finance/Advisory Committee, which serves as a resource when making important state decisions. --Sigrid Luther, NCTM Southern Division President Dayton, Tennessee Dayton is a city in Rhea County, Tennessee, United States.
