South boys wrap up soccer title.


Byline: The Register-Guard

Ian Smith scored the winning goal off an assist from Alex Dakers in the 71st minute as host South Eugene defeated South Medford 2-1 to clinch its second straight Southwest Conference prep boys soccer title on Saturday.

The win improved the Axemen's record to 8-1-0 in league with one match remaining and dropped the second-place Panthers to 6-3-0.

Santiago Guerrero scored for South Medford in the 20th minute. In the 60th minute, Dakers was fouled in the penalty box and Dion Coxe scored on the penalty kick to tie the match for South Eugene.

Alex Russell scored two goals and Tony Barbieri, Joe Lopez and Justin Taylor added one each to lead host North Medford to a 5-1 victory over Sheldon. Garrett Clay scored on a scramble in the box in the 39th minute for the Irish.

Bay Gross scored two goals and A.J. Leep added one as visiting St. Mary's improved to 8-0-1 in District 3 with a 3-0 victory over Glide.

Julio Olvera scored off an assist from Eric Gerlach in the 55th minute to give Creswell a 2-1 victory over visiting Umpqua Valley Christian in District 3 play. The Monarchs opened the scoring in the 10th minute before Jesse Renfro tied the match in the 39th minute for Creswell.

Girls soccer

Kierra DeBow assisted on a goal by Stephanie Ralls in the third minute and a score by Kristen Wassom in the 37th minute as Sheldon clinched at least a tie for the Southwest Conference title by beating visiting North Medford 2-0.

Annie Mohler was in goal for Sheldon, which finishes the league season at South Eugene on Tuesday.

Mackenzie Kerins scored off an assist from Sara Tepfer in the 29th minute and Lacy Clark scored off an assist by Rachel Bunting two minutes later for visiting South Eugene in a 2-0 Southwest Conference victory over South Medford. Dana Harrington got the shutout.

Volleyball

Allie Rogers had eight kills and Deanna Cardani had 10 digs to lead second-place Marist to a 25-5, 25-16, 25-5 Sky-Em League win at La Pine. Lindsey Roderick had 10 kills and Kendal Hess contributed 14 assists for the Hawks.

Felicia Pledger had 13 kills and Sam Stoneback had 22 assists to lead first-place Sisters to a 22-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-19 Sky-Em League victory at Cottage Grove. Amber Walker had nine kills and Dani Nowak added 12 assists for Cottage Grove.

Molly McClaughry had six kills and Lindsey Vaughn added 17 assists to lead host Junction City past Elmira 25-12, 25-5, 25-14 in a Sky-Em League match. Samantha Shipley and Kayla Rauschert added five kills apiece for the Tigers, and Katie Perritt led Elmira with four kills.

Central Linn defeated host Oakland 21-25, 19-25, 25-21, 25-14, 15-11 in a Mountain View Conference match to improve to 8-5 in league. Molly Earls had 10 kills and Amber Dikkers had nine for Oakland.

Nicole Monson had six kills and seven service aces to lead Oakridge to a 21-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-18, 15-13 Mountain View Conference win at Riddle. Andrea Stratton had 10 kills and 13 digs and Ashley Yackamouih contributed 10 digs for Riddle.

Elyssa Emel finished with 10 kills, Stephanie Hescock had 25 digs and Mariah Wilson contributed 15 assists and 10 digs as second-place North Douglas handed host Yoncalla a 25-23, 27-25, 25-21 Mountain View Conference defeat. Amanda Thorp had 10 kills, 10 digs and eight assists for Yoncalla.

Gretchen Owens finished with 12 kills and Zoe Brown added 12 assists to lead first-place Glendale over Monroe 25-19, 19-25, 25-13, 25-20 in a Mountain View Conference match. Kim Thompson had 10 kills and Tessa Stroda had 18 digs and 14 assists for Monroe.
