South Pacific Resources - Exploration Update - Masupa Ria Area.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 31, 1996-- South Pacific Resources Corp. ( ASE (Adaptive Server Enterprise) A relational DBMS from Sybase that runs on Windows NT/2000, Linux and a variety of Unix platforms. .) is pleased to report on the exploration progress at its Masupa Ria, and adjacent area projects in Central Kalimantan Central Kalimantan (Indonesian: Kalimantan Tengah often abbreviated to Kalteng) is a province of Indonesia, one of four in Kalimantan - the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo. Its provincial capital is Palangkaraya.

The province has a population of 1.
, Indonesia. The Masupa Ria Contract of Work ("CoW") area is currently the prime focus of exploration efforts but the adjacent CoW areas known as Jangkang and Mirih are considered equally prospective. Exploration activities to date, although slower than originally planned, are extremely encouraging. This has enabled the Company to increase its geology staff in order to accelerate the exploration of several prospective areas, each of which hold the potential of hosting a large bulk tonnage TONNAGE, mar. law. The preliminary interpretation of a combined airborne magnetic/ radiometric 13,351 line km survey recently completed over the Masupa Ria and Jangkang areas identified the presence of at least 10 geophysical ge·o·phys·ics

targets. A similar survey is currently in progress on the Mirih block for scheduled completion in early November. In order to accelerate the exploration efforts over the entire area an additional six geologists were recently employed to join the five geologists already on site. As well, two additional bulldozers will be mobilized to the project site in November to join the two already on site. Mr. Imants Kavalieris, a consulting geologist who was recently engaged to review the Company's exploration activities commented, "the Masupa Ria alteration system is spectacular, because of its large size possibly in excess of 100 sq km. By comparison Kelian has a very small alteration zone, perhaps 1-2 sq km in area but hosts about 5 million ounces of gold mineralization Mineralization

Exploration highlights of the Masupa Ria CoW area, (see attached map, Figure 1, attached) for the period between June through October 20,1996 include the following:

Hit target no intercept

Note: True width of the drill intercepts has not been determined

To date, 13 holes have been completed by South Pacific Resources for a total 2,077.6 metres located in the central portion of the Ongkang Vein. The drilling has consistently intersected a zone of steeply dipping epithermal quartz veins and breccias ranging in true width up to 25 metres in 9 of the 13 holes. The mineralization is associated with intense montmorillonite-quartz-carbonate-pyrite alteration developed in a microporphyritic andesite andesite

Any member of a large family of rocks that occur in most of the world's volcanic areas, mainly as surface deposits and to a lesser extent as dikes and small plugs.
. Anomalous gold values in the range from 0.3 to 2.0 g/t occur over drill widths up to 100 metres which contain narrow zones of 2 to 10 metres with high grade gold and silver values. The drill core has been split and fire assayed and the reject pulp subjected to cyanide cyanide (sī`ənīd'), chemical compound containing the cyano group, -CN. Cyanides are salts or esters of hydrogen cyanide (hydrocyanic acid, HCN) formed by replacing the hydrogen with a metal (e.g., sodium or potassium) or a radical (e.g.  leaching. Check analysis using cyanide leach on selected intercepts produced results which closely agree with the fire assay values. This indicated that the majority of the gold is free milling and leachable.

Note: True width of drill intercepts has not been determined

The drill results have demonstrated that the Ongkang Vein System is continuous over the area of in-fill drilling. Because of the intrinsic erratic nature of epithermal gold mineralization the width and grade of the mineralization zone is difficult to determine based on the limited data available from the drilling to date. Company geologists believe there is good potential to continue developing a gold resource at the Ongkang Vein Prospect but that most of this potential lies beneath a large and thick silica silica or silicon dioxide, chemical compound, SiO2. It is insoluble in water, slightly soluble in alkalies, and soluble in dilute hydrofluoric acid. Pure silica is colorless to white.  leach cap along strike northwest of current drilling activity. TAROJAN GOLD DISTRICT

A significant zone of alteration has been identified within a sequence of altered andesitic pyroclastics situated at the intersection of several regional structures. These lineaments include the northwest trending Ongkang Structural Zone and the east-west trending Kiwi Fault which are the principal structural controls for vein hosted gold mineralization identified in the Ongkang and Kiwi Gold Districts. The alteration zone is at least 1 km in diameter. After completing a series of reconnaissance traverses through the Tarojan area consulting geologist Imants Kavalieris remarked that "at Tarojan the size of the illite-pyrite alteration is striking." Work to date has included the construction of 7 new helipads and the completion of a series of reconnaissance geological traverses during which 38 rock grab samples Noun 1. grab sample - a single sample or measurement taken at a specific time or over as short a period as feasible

Line-cutting and grid based geological follow-up is planned to commence in December and will be initially focused on targets identified by the recently completed airborne magnetics survey.

AIRBORNE GEOPHYSICAL SURVEY Geophysical survey refers to the systematic collection of geophysical data for spatial studies. Geophysical surveys may use a great variety of sensing instruments, and data may be collected from above or below the Earth's surface or from aerial or marine platforms.

A preliminary interpretation of the recently completed a 13,351 line km airborne magnetic and radiometric survey over the Masupa Ria and Jangkang blocks confirms the presence of at least 10 anomalies three of which are considered significant. The first and highest priority anomaly forms a prominent magnetic low situated over the Tarojan caldera caldera: see crater.

OTHER PROSPECT AREAS IN THE MASUPA RIA CoW AREA

In addition to the Ongkang, Kiwi and Tarojan Gold Districts, previous exploration work completed by BP Minerals in the Masupa Ria area identified 10 other prospect areas. Limited reconnaissance traversing has been conducted over the Ringsa, Ardiensa, Tosa, Transit, and Menyawang Prospects. A total of 87 rock and 18 stream samples were collected with the significant assays reported below. The prospect locations are shown on the attached map noted as Figure 1.
