South's title bid falls short.

Byline: Adam Jude The Register-Guard

TIGARD - Some 12 yards apart, Niki Paulson and Jesslyn Rahm stood facing each other, the weight of the girls soccer state championship hanging in the space between them.

Like four teammates before her, Paulson sneaked a penalty kick past Rahm to clinch No. 1 Tualatin's 1-0 victory over No. 2 South Eugene during an overtime shootout Shootout

Rahm, South Eugene's standout senior goalkeeper, sat motionless, her face buried in the turf.

"It's unreal," said Paulson, a junior midfielder. "I just thought about putting the ball in the back of the net. I thrive under that pressure."

After 100 scoreless minutes of regulation and overtime, Tualatin and South Eugene each sent five shooters forward for the penalty-kick shootout. The Timberwolves (16-0-3) won the shootout 5-3, culminating with Paulson's final kick, to give them their first championship.

Annah Kennedy, Courtney Verloo, Lindsey Wilcox, Kaley Soderquist and Paulson converted their penalty kicks for the Timberwolves, who won the Pac-9 Conference championship.

Meghan Anderson, Devany Jones and Rianna Mansfield connected on their PK attempts for the Axemen. The lone miss of the shootout came when a shot from South Eugene's Amy Densmore sailed over Parlee and caromed off the crossbar and out of harm's way beyond the danger limit; in a safe place.

"I was just trying to relax," said Parlee, a junior goalie. "All the pressure is on the shooter; they're expected to make it."

Neither team seemed too thrilled about having the state title come down to the shootout.

"That's just a bad way to decide things," Stratton said. "It's tough to lose on one shot. It's deflating, but we gave it all we had and left it all on the field."

South settled down, and the two teams went back and forth in the middle of the field.

Mansfield provided the Axemen's best hope for a goal in regulation with about a minute left before halftime, when her left-footed shot deflected de·flect

"If someone hadn't been on that ball," Parlee said, "it could've been over for us."

After 80 evenly matched minutes of regulation, two 10-minute overtime sessions didn't provide any scoring either, with both teams feeling the effects of the strenuous action.

"Over time, everyone was dead tired," Stratton said. "And that made it difficult to make that extra pass and get that extra power on shots."

South had a 13-10 advantage in shots, though that mattered little when the title came down to the shootout.

"I wasn't disappointed in our play at all," said Stratton, in his first year as the South coach. "I thought (the Axemen) did really well. I thought we created more chances overall."
