Soul On Soul: The Life And Music Of Mary Lou Williams Mary Lou Williams (May 8, 1910 – May 28, 1981) was an American jazz stride pianist, composer, and arranger.

She was born Mary Elfrieda Scruggs in Atlanta, Georgia and grew up in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
 is a superbly researched, written, and presented biography by Tammy Kernodle (Associate Professor of Music, Miami University Miami University, main campus at Oxford, Ohio; coeducational; state supported; chartered 1809, opened 1824. The library has extensive collections in literature and American history, including the William Holmes McGuffey Library and Museum and the Edgar W. , Oxford, Ohio Oxford is a college town located in the southwestern portion of the U.S. state of Ohio in northwestern Butler County in Oxford Township, originally called the College Township. Mary Lou Williams (1910-1981) was a versatile musical phenomena who experimented with and mastered most of the emerging styles in the evolution of jazz. She wrote for and arranged music for such legends as Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman Noun 1. Benny Goodman - United States clarinetist who in 1934 formed a big band (including black as well as white musicians) and introduced a kind of jazz known as swing (1909-1986)
