Soul Food: 105 Inspirational Stories for African Americans.

Soul Food: 105 Inspirational Stories for African Americans by Eric V. Copage (Hyperion, $11.95)

Storytelling has long been part of the African American experience. Passed down from our African ancestors, stories were used to teach morality, enforce values, and restore faith. In Soul Food, author Eric Copage returns to those roots to inspire his readers to "live their best lives." Using such varied celebrity sources as Nikki Giovanni and Queen Latifah, while also employing African folktales folktale, general term for any of numerous varieties of traditional narrative. The telling of stories appears to be a cultural universal, common to primitive and complex societies alike. Even the forms folktales take are demonstrably similar from culture to culture, and comparative studies of themes and narrative techniques have been successful in showing these relationships. Among the foremost folklorists of the 19th cent. were Oskar Dähnhardt in Germany, S. and stories from ordinary people, Copage weaves a colorful and diverse tapestry of anecdotes that are sure to stir the spirit and refresh our memory of the things that are most important in life. An excellent casual read for the morning train or before you retire for the evening.
