Sorting out beliefs.I found it interesting that several things Terre Davis said a candidate should do as part of a superintendent search are precisely the things I did when considering other positions ("Sorting Out Beliefs in a Job Search," October October: see month. 2006). In one school district, I discovered things during my research that led me to turn down the job when it was offered. In one other instance, I was a finalist and considered a "shoo-in." Though a majority of the board members were Lutheran like me, after talking individually to several of them, I developed some concerns and backed off. In another district, where I had done some work as a consultant, I declined an interview for the superintendency Su`per`in`tend´en`cy n. 1. The act of superintending; superintendence. , and when asked why, I indicated I wasn't a "silk stocking" district type of a superintendent. That probably wasn't too diplomatic, but it got me out of the situation. KENNETH L.
