Ronald Sutherland, general manager of the Government Simulation Business Unit at E&S attended the event and said, "The National Aerospace Laboratory team has done an exceptional job at developing a world-class full mission simulator. This program is important to E&S because it gives us the opportunity to demonstrate state-of-the-art visual system fidelity. We are looking forward to a successful relationship with NLR."

In discussing the unique challenges E&S faced on this program, David Janke, vice president of International Business said, "The National Simulation Facility required the design of a motion-compatible VistaView system and a custom designed, removable dome with demanding structural characteristics. In spite of these design challenges, we were able to deliver a system that meets the customer's requirements and provides the high quality imagery needed to support research and development activities."

The ESIG-3000 Global Texture (GT) image generator, VistaView head-tracked projector, 17-foot dome, and the EaSIEST database modeling system are the main components of the E&S system. The ESIG-3000 GT delivers high-resolution, real-time imagery for a variety of research and training scenarios.

VistaView utilizes state-of-the-art head tracking technology and a high resolution inset to provide a full 360 degree field of regard for the pilot. High-fidelity global textured databases are created using EaSIEST and then displayed on the domed surface providing unmatched realism for research, development, or training applications. The dome is mounted on a six degrees-of-freedom motion platform and is completely removable allowing NLR to reconfigure the simulator to accommodate other cockpits.

NLR's research simulation facility provides a realistic man-in-the-loop vehicle simulation with a primary focus on flight simulation. The NSF is a full scenario research fighter simulator with the emphasis on F-16 MLU. Development is also under way for helicopter simulation.
