Sony unveils world's fastest DDS-2 tape drive and autoloader; SDT-7000 is 50% faster than nearest competition and combines with Sony's first DDS-2 tape autoloader to offer highest performance in the industry.

SAN JOSE San Jose, city, United States
San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 11, 1995--Sony elevated the DDS-2 tape format to a higher level of performance today with the introduction of two products: a new quad-speed drive and Sony's first DDS-2 autoloader.

The SDT-7000 half-height, 3.5-inch drive offers an unprecedented drum rotational speed Rotational speed (sometimes called speed of revolution) indicates, for example, how fast a motor is running. Rotational speed is equivalent to angular speed, but with different units. Rotational speed tells how many complete rotations (i.e.  of 8,503 RPM, which is more than four times the speed of conventional drives. It provides the industry's fastest sustained data transfer rate of 778 KB/sec. (without compression) to 1.5MB/sec. (with compression).

The TSL-7000 is an eight-cartridge autoloader that can store up to 64GB of compressed data. Equipped with an SDT-7000 drive, the TSL-7000 can double the amount of data backed up (unattended) in the same amount of time as can be achieved with autoloaders using conventional speed DDS-2 drives.

tape has always been a cost-effective and high capacity storage option, and now we are offering the fast transfer rates that customers have been asking for," explained Kim Kelly, Director, Tape Streamer Products Division of Sony's Component and Computer Products Group. "The SDT-7000 doubles the data throughput that can be sent in the limited backup window."

The drive can store 4GB of uncompressed data on a 120-meter DDS-2 tape and up to 8GB of information using the drive's on-board DCLZ DCLZ Data Compression Lempel-Ziv  data compression capabilities. Also, the SDT-7000 can search for and access a file on 120 meter tape in an average of less than 40 seconds.

The following are considered asynchronous operations. The interval between transmitting A and B is not the same as between B and C. Sony has achieved a substantial increase in performance for the SDT-7000 without compromising reliability. In fact, the drive's MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) The average time a component works without failure. It is the number of failures divided by the hours under observation.

MTBF - Mean Time Between Failures
(Mean Time Between Failure) rating has more than doubled to 200,000 power on hours.

The SDT-7000 incorporates Sony's patented automatic Super Head Cleaner(TM) mechanism, and the drive will indicate when cleaning cartridge use is required. Also, the SDT-7000 will automatically inform the operator when the media is becoming worn or showing excessive error rates and needs to be replaced.

Sony's First DDS-2 Tape Autoloader

The TSL-7000 autoloader incorporates a single drive and up to 8 DDS cartridges loaded into a removable magazine for high capacity, easy handling, security, and convenient portability. Both LCD and LED readouts are located on the face of the unit allowing for easy operation.

"With the TSL-7000 you can back up eight times the amount of data unattended than can be achieved with a single drive," said Kelly. "This autoloader can easily handle the storage requirements of single- or multiple-server environments without any manual cartridge swapping or magazine exchange needed."

rating of 100,000 cycles. MSBF -- mean swaps between failure -- is a measurement of how often a cartridge can be exchanged between a magazine cell and the drive. Sony's unique cartridge transport system employs a "push method" which offers superior reliability over conventional cartridge pick/grip tape handling methods.

The autoloader is a full-height, 5.25-inch format, internal unit that can be easily integrated into most servers. It measures 3.25" H x 5.75" W x 9.5" D and weighs a little over five and a half pounds. Typical power consumption is 13.1 watts.

The SDT-7000 DDS-2 tape drive will begin shipping to OEMs later this month and the TSL-7000 will begin production in December of 1995.

The Component and Computer Products Group of Sony Electronics Inc., headquartered in San Jose, Calif., markets Trinitron(R) monitors, optical drives and jukeboxes, floppy disk drives, tape drives and autoloaders, multimedia products, and other products through OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and , industrial distribution and reseller channels.
