Sony begins sale of new copy-protected CDs.
Sony Music Entertainment Sony Music Entertainment is a major global record label controlled by the Sony Corporation. In 1988, Sony Corporation acquired CBS Records, Inc. for $2 billion. CBS Inc., now CBS Corporation, retained the rights to the CBS name, and Sony renamed the label announced in January January: see month. that it has started
sales of new CD singles that can only be copied once onto a user's
computer. Using a new proprietary format called LabelGate, the CDs will
direct the user to Sony's Web site for a payment of [yen] 200 if
the user tries to copy the contents more than once. Sony SONY Standard Oil of New York (common, but untrue; it's an urban legend) says that all
singles issued from mid January will use the new format and that albums
will adopt the format in April.
