Sony StorStation Drive System enters tape drive market.

and Small Office Backup

In a move to make high capacity data backup practical for the home and small office market, Sony Electronics' Recording Media and Energy Group (RMEG RMEG Reference Media Evaluation Guide

) announced its new Sony StorStation drive system, the first tape drive to be marketed by the group.

The Sony StorStation drive system is a 1GB native, 2GB compressed tape drive developed specifically for the home and small office user. The StorStation drive system will offer customers the same 10MB/minute backup performance as Travan-1(TM) technology drives at a lower cost per MB. In addition, the StorStation package will include one free 2GB cartridge, easy to use "one-step" backup software See backup program.

With 2GB of capacity, "one step" backup software and a suggested retail price below $200 the StorStation fulfills these PC users' needs," said Striano.

Developed in association with Iomega, the StorStation drive and media utilize Sony's QIC-WIDE technology and incorporate Iomega's 2GB format. Iomega will also be marketing a drive and cartridge based on the same 2GB tape format called the Ditto 2GB(TM).

Installation is simple, with the StorStation drive plugging directly into a computer's parallel port. In addition, backup software allows for quick set up of the drive and "one-step" backup.
