Sony Ships 100 Million FeliCa Chips.


Tokyo, Japan, Oct 20, 2005 - (JCNN JCNN Japan Corporate News Network ) - Sony announced on October 19 that FeliCa, a non-contact chip, has shipped 100 million units as of this month. The chip has been used for Osaifu Keitai (mobile wallet service) for NTT DoCoMo (NTT Mobile Communications Network, Inc., Japan) Founded in 1991, NTT DoCoMo is a spinoff of Japan's NTT (Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation) which provides wireless services, including cellular, paging, satellite and maritime and in-flight telephone services.  and au, as well as railroad railroad or railway, form of transportation most commonly consisting of steel rails, called tracks, on which freight cars, passenger cars, and other rolling stock are drawn by one locomotive or more.  company JR East's Suica and BitWallet's Edy smartcards. By country, 71 million units have been shipped in Japan, followed by 16 million units in Hong Kong Hong Kong (hŏng kŏng), Mandarin Xianggang, special administrative region of China, formerly a British crown colony (2005 est. pop. 6,899,000), land area 422 sq mi (1,092 sq km), adjacent to Guangdong prov. , 10 million units in Singapore, 1.5 million units in Shenzhen (China), 1 million units in Delhi (India), and 500,000 units in Bangkok (Thailand). FeliCa chips have also been marketed in the US and the UK.

First launched in 1996, the FeliCa chip hit the 30 million mark in 2001, the 50 million market in 2003 and the 80 million mark in 2004.
