Screen Gems will provide a haven for a type of film that falls between those currently released by our highly valued Sony Pictures Classics, and the wide release movies that are more traditionally developed and released by Columbia Pictures.

"By creating a new label with a targeted marketing capability for movies that fall into this in-between category, we are in a unique position among the larger studios," said Calley. "We were convinced that these movies have not had the concentrated marketing efforts needed to capture their full potential in the past."

Lucy Fisher, chairman of the Columbia/TriStar Motion Picture Group (CTMPG), commended the creation of the new label, stating: "Screen Gems will enable this type of movie to thrive while, at the same time, give SPE a platform for new, cutting edge talent to grow and prosper."

Lemberger stated that Screen Gems will concentrate on using existing Sony Pictures resources to acquire and market films that reach a broader audience. "Screen Gems will eventually handle roughly a half dozen movies a year and will allow us to concentrate on the specific marketing and distribution needs for films that fall into this category," he said.
