Sony DTF 1/2" Tape Drive Awarded "Gold Seal Certification" from SGI; Computer Giant Approves Sony System for Variety of Platforms.ATLANTA, Networld + Interop, Booth No. 2836--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Sept. 18, 1996--Sony Electronics' DTF (Digital Tape Format) A high-performance magnetic tape technology from Sony that was based on the helical scan transport and cartridge shell of Sony's highly successful 1/2" Digital Betacam. (TM) 1/2" Tape Drive - one of the fastest drives commercially available - has been a "thumbs up" from Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI (SGI, Sunnyvale, CA, www.sgi.com) A manufacturer of workstations and servers, founded in 1982 by Jim Clark. The company was founded as Silicon Graphics, Inc., but changed to its acronym in 1999. ) and awarded "Gold Seal Certification" for integration with SGI platforms. Undergoing a rigorous series of tests on operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap. IRIX A Unix-based operating system from SGI that is used in its computer systems from desktop to supercomputer. It is an enhanced version of Unix System V Release 4. IRIX integrates the X Window system with OpenGL, creating the first real time 3D X environment. (R) 5.3 and 6.2, the Sony DTF Tape Drive has been certified to be compatible with SGI's Challenge(R), Power Challenge and Onyx onyx (ŏn`ĭks), variety of cryptocrystalline quartz, differing from agate only in that the bands of which it is composed are parallel and regular. (R) platforms. In addition, the Gold Seal Certification provides a tape driver supporting the DTF tape drive, thus allowing the drive to be "plug-n-play" with SGI computer platforms. Gold Seal Certification from SGI denotes that company's full support for the computer peripheral product that receives the award and carries with it SGI's worldwide reputation for endorsing the product. "When we endorse a product we are making a guarantee to our customers that it is a product of great quality that it compatible to our platforms," said Robert Clark There are several people by the name of Robert Clark:
"We are very pleased to have received SGI's endorsement of our product," said Ichiro Segawa, vice president of data systems for Sony Electronics' Business and Professional Group. "With DTF, Sony combines speed, capacity and reliability in tape-based computer back-up." With SGI's Gold Seal, end users will be able to easily integrate the high speed DTF Tape Drive into numerous applications including broadcast and production, film and entertainment, finance, insurance, scientific and others. In addition, with DTF's standard and easy-to-use SCSI-2 command sets, the drive interfaces with almost any computer platform providing high speed back-up and archiving capabilities for mainframe, client/server and mid-range computer systems. The DTF drive combines a maximum capacity of 42 GB of uncompressed data per cassette with a sustained transfer rate of 12 MB/sec over SCSI-2 Fast/Wide interfaces. With its large single tape capacity, the DTF drive enables back-up using far fewer tapes than those required by conventional means (i.e. 3490) and can complete a back up of 42 GB in less than one hour. This combination of large capacity and high speed back up provides the end user with substantial cost saving in just a short period of time. Sony DTF 1/2" tape drives are supported by a full complement of robotic auto cassette loaders and libraries. The DTF Auto Cassette Loader A program routine that copies a program into memory for execution. provides nine tape slots for a maximum uncompressed capacity of 378 GB. A maximum of 35 large cassettes, or 70 small cassettes can be stored in the small robotic library which offers up to 1.47 TB of uncompressed formatted storage within a density of 210 GB/cu ft. The library can hold one or two DTF drives and operates under both SCSI-2 and RS-232C interface control. Additional tape libraries, with uncompressed capacities of up to 2 Petabytes, are also available. The DTF Tape Drive and its full complement of autoloader and library systems are available through leading computer peripheral manufacturers.
