CHICAGO -- Sonus Networks (Nasdaq:SONSE), a leading provider of voice over IP (VoIP) infrastructure solutions, today announced that its Insignus(TM) Softswitch, featuring the ASX ASX

Access Server, now supports voice services on WiFi telephones. Sonus is demonstrating these capabilities in its exhibit at SUPERCOMM 2004.

The convergence of two industry trends is driving the adoption of voice over WiFi (VoWiFi). First, 2004 will be the year in which VoIP services start to achieve significant adoption among end-user subscribers. At the same time, WiFi is growing in popularity as the predominant access technology for businesses, residences and public areas. Delivering voice services over WiFi networks is a natural extension of the Sonus Networks Open Services Architecture The Open Service Access or OSA is part of the 3rd generation mobile telecommunications network or UMTS. OSA describes how services are architected in an UMTS network.

The standards for OSA are being developed as part of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).

), and can now be enabled by Sonus' ASX Access Server.

"We view the emergence of VoIP services for end users as a major industry theme in 2004, and this, coupled with the ubiquity of WiFi, offers exciting possibilities for delivering voice services over WiFi networks," said Michael O'Hara, vice president, marketing, Sonus Networks. "The ASX Access Server, with its robust SIP capabilities, is an ideal platform on which to offer these services, and we expect this to be an important disruptive technology A new technology that has a serious impact on the status quo and changes the way people have been dealing with something, perhaps for decades. Music CDs all but wiped out the phonograph industry within a few years, and digital cameras are destined to eliminate the film industry.  in the years ahead."

In Sonus' booth #25204, the company is conducting live demonstrations of VoWiFi services using the Sonus ASX Access Server and the Pulver Innovations WiSIP handset.
