Solvay, Brussels, Belgium, has received regulatory approval to acquire BP's engineering polymers business. The new company will be called Solvay Advanced Polymers, LLC, and will be headquartered in Alpharetta, GA. The acquisition includes plant sites in Atlanta and Augusta, GA; Marietta, OH; and Greenville, SC. Solvay Advanced Polymers and its foreign affiliates will employ about 700 people in the U.S., Europe and Asia. This acquisition is part of a larger agreement involving the transfer of the Solvay Group's polypropylene business to BP and the formation of two joint ventures between Solvay and BP in high density polyethylene High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is a polyethylene thermoplastic made from petroleum. It takes 1.75 kilograms of petroleum (in terms of energy and raw materials) to make one kilogram of HDPE.  (HDPE).
