Solectron Acquires Two Facilities.


Solectron Corp. (Milpitas, CA) has acquired Cisco Systems, Inc.'s (San Jose, CA) Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (spelling) wave division multiplexing - A common misnomer for wavelength division multiplexing.  (DWDM (Dense WDM) The term given to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) when significantly more channels were being added. Since WDM is increasingly more "dense" all the time, both terms are used synonymously. See WDM.

Solectron expects to move the DWDM operation to the company's East Coast optical center of competence in Charlotte, NC. Solectron assumes full manufacturing, test and certain new product introduction (NPI NPI National Provider Identifier, see there ) responsibility for Cisco's core DWDM multiplex, demultiplex and add/drop optical modules for the next two years. Solectron will provide a full range of services to Cisco, consisting of optical assembly and test, which includes splicing splicing /splicĀ·ing/ (spliĀ“sing)

 and fiber handling, supply-base management and in-warranty repair services.

Solectron has offered employment to key operations and management individuals who are familiar with Cisco's optical product line and have significant optical experience and capabilities.

Solectron also announced a definitive agreement to acquire Singapore Shinei Sangyo Pte Ltd. (Singapore), a privately held manufacturer and designer of enclosures for electronics products.

Following the completion of the transaction, Shinei, which will be renamed Shinei International, will be an independently operated subsidiary within Solectron's newly formed power, packaging and cooling unit, and will continue to market services to other companies separately.

Solectron will gain specialized manufacturing and design capabilities, including custom enclosure design and prototyping, tooling and metal fabrication fabrication (fab´rikā´shn),
n the construction or making of a restoration.

Shinei has more than 3,000 employees worldwide and business operations that include locations in Singapore, Malaysia, China, Scotland and the U.S. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
